Philippe Coutinho insists he wants to become a Liverpool legend amid intense Barcelona reports
Reports in Spain on Tuesday claimed the Liverpool star had agreed to join Barcelona in a summer transfer.
Barcelona are reportedly ready to offer €90 million to Liverpool with the Reds facing a battle at the end of the season to keep their most influential player.
Coutinho attended a dinner for the Former Players end of season awards on Monday night and revealed his future ambitions when he collected the Player of the Season accolade.
‘One day I hope I can win as many trophies for Liverpool as players in the past did,’ Coutinho told the crowd.
Coutinho was the guest of honour at the awards as the current superstar of Liverpool Football Club.
Coutinho has been in excellent form this season and is one of the favourites to win the club’s Player of the Season award on Tuesday night.
It would be no surprise if Barcelona do eventually make a move for the playmaker, but given he has just signed a new five-year contract, it seems unlikely he is pushing to leave.
His speech at 5Times’ ceremony mirrors his sentiment from back in January, when he stressed he was hoping to follow in the footsteps of Liverpool’s legendary former players.
“My goal is to be thought of one day in the same way as these players. They are legends,” he said.
“I want to win titles. Five years is my new contract…it gives me that opportunity.”
Coutinho defining success by loyalty is an encouraging sign, with the No. 10 seemingly committed to Liverpool for the long term—and committed to lifting more trophies.
